ok first in terms of improvements you can make getting better speaker wire will make the most difference but even then you still might have trouble hearing much of a difference. i would recommend getting good speakers wire but dont bother spending hundreds on it. there is no special way to insert the wire. and the only thing having an unshielded speaker near a tv will do is distort the picture. if you didnt notice any picture distortion then you certainly didnt have it close enough to the tv to cause any damage. if your tv looks fine now then it is fine. most home theater setups have the sub pretty clse to the tv. as long as its not 6 inches away it shouldnt be a real problem. the best upgrade you could make is to buy better speakers. the ones that came with your unit are great. they are called home theater in a box packages and they are great for people on a budget. but getting better speakers would greatly improve the sound.(after all where does the sound come from?) just make sure they are all from the same brand as all speakers “voices” are different and will not give you the best surround effect if they are different brands. i hope i helped you.

The speaker wires are actually the LEAST important part of your system. But companies that only sell wire … they are selling you something.
You would be better off buying a setup DVD (Avia, Digital Video Essenials), a SPL meter and then calibrating the sound levels from all your speakers.
Then put the sub in the corner, but pull it along the longest un-broken wall about 1/3 or 2/5 the length. This is usually at the front, but the back is fine too.
Use a laser pointer to see where those speakers are pointing and align them.
These are all much better uses of your time and money than adding expensive wires to a inexpensive system.
Follow this rule: spend no more than 10% of the equipment you are hooking up on the wires.
I strongly suggest you just buy a spool of decent, oxygen free wire from a builder site like http://www.partsexpress.com and use this instead of any retail brand.
