There are many things to consider when fitting a dishwasher or washing machine. They are two of the usual kitchen appliances that can be fitted by yourself, rather than employing someone to do it for you, however if you choose to do it yourself this article will help you to understand what is involved and how to do it.

Each and every brand of appliance is different and will perform differently. To get the most out of your appliance it is important that it is fitted correctly. It is always important to ask about any insurance options for your appliance at the time of purchase and the length of its warranty, therefore if your appliance should need assistance at anytime, you will be aware of any help available to you.

Washing machines and dishwashers require both a water supply and drainage. There are washing machines on the market that require both hot and cold water supply and some that only need cold. Dishwashers normally use cold water. These appliances will be supplied with flexible hoses and screw connection to affix them to the water supply.

The usual method used to fit the appliance is as follows, however it is important to consult the manufacturers literature prior to fitting.

1. Ensure you have adequate space for the appliance. A freestanding dishwasher/washing machine is typically 600mm, however an integrated washing machine is slightly smaller.

2. It is important that the floor covering has been laid in the area that the appliance will sit prior to final fitting. Its important to make sure the floor is level. Most appliances can be leveled slightly using the adjustable legs.

3. The depth of the appliance should be measured to ensure that it fits comfortably and does not protrude or squash the fittings at the back of the appliance.

4. The water supply at the rear of the appliance should be checked prior to fitting to ensure they run via an in-line valve. This ensures that the supply can be isolated if needed.

5. When you open the valves to connect the water hoses, ensure you have a towel handy as the water that has been left in the pipes will escape.

6. The water hoses (supplied) should now be connected to the back of the appliance and the other ends to the water supply (red to hot and blue to cold).

7. The waste hose should be connected at the bottom of the washing machine or dishwasher and out to the waste pipe where drainage will occur.

8. Your appliance is now fitted and can be positioned. The feet on the appliance may need slight adjustment to ensure it is level.

If the cabinets in the kitchen are new and have never had knobs installed in them before you will have to first measure and mark off where the cabinet knobs will go before drilling any holes. First, decide where the knobs will look the best on the cabinet. Some people prefer the center of the cabinet edge for the knobs while others prefer something that is off center. 3 inches above the bottom of an upper cabinet is generally a good place for kitchen cabinet knobs to be installed. Using a ruler and a pencil, make a small mark on the cabinet where the hole will be drilled for the knob. Make sure all of the cabinets have equal and accurate measurements so all of the knobs are equally placed and spaced. If upper cabinet knobs are placed 3 inches from the bottom of the cabinet, place the knobs 3 inches from the top of lower cabinets below the counter top.

Most kitchen cabinet knobs are attached to a screw or a cylindrical attachment that goes through the hole drilled in the cabinet. Before drilling any holes, inspect the size of the screw that is to go through the cabinetry and pick a drill bit of a coordinating size to drill the hole with. Following the marked off measurements previously made, drill a hole for each knob on the cabinet. Once the hole is made, the cabinet knob can be put through the hole and secured at the back.

If there are already knobs in the kitchen cabinet and you wish to replace the old ones with new ones the process is quite simple. Drilling is rarely needed because they can usually be unscrewed by hand or easily taken off with the help of a hand held screw driver. Once the old knobs are unscrewed and taken out, the new ones can be installed by putting them through the holes that the previous ones were in and securing them in the back.
